Only us

A few months ago, we switched from cable internet to DSL, mostly because of price. The DSL was $20 a month cheaper. Since then, we've had intermittent connection problems, especially after we installed a wireless router so that I could check email via the laptop. The internet system crashed a lot, and the wireless connection was not at all dependable. We *thought* that, maybe, the wireless issues were due to conflicts with the cordless phone. We'd had cordless incompatibility with other electronic equipment before, so we unplugged the cordless...
*If* the internet was up the wireless worked fine, but the internet was prone to disconnecting at random intervals, especially whenever the phone would ring. Drove Bill crazy to be playing WoW only to have a political call disconnect the modem. Again and again and again, sometimes 5 times in a three minute span.
We ran out of things to try, so we broke down and called service. They came today and, after about 3 hours fiddling with the outside jack, inside wiring, and even router boxes up the road we got internet! Dependable, even if the phone rings internet.
We also started getting phone calls for the neighbors. And we'd pick up the phone to make a call only to hear a ringing tone and - guess what? - the neighbors would pick up. This phenomena happened only on one phone, the phone at Bill's desk, the phone on the same jack as the DSL modem. The other phones - including the cordless which now isn't knocking out the wireless modem - work normally.
Only we would have an internet issue turn into a party line. lol
The service tech will be back tomorrow. Here's hoping we get the mess untangled.
